Nail Polish Your Boyfriend Will Love

If your boyfriend is in to comics, like mine, he's going to love the latest nail polish collection from OPI. OPI has created a line for the upcoming Spider-Man movie starring Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone. It's an edgy yet feminine collection that beauty freaks and comic book geeks will surely get into.

In May, OPI will release six bold shades just in time to help promote the movie's July release. Ranging from coral to midnight blue, these colors will be perfect to wear on your upcoming movie date with your beau to see The Amazing Spider-Man.

The polishes are pretty and they definitely speak well of the color stories and themes in Spider-Man, but the names are a bit too cliche. With names like "Call me Gwen-ever" and "Your Web or Mine?" I think there could have been a little more creativity in that area. Otherwise, they're super cute shades, and it's a pretty great marketing scheme to get girly-girls excited about their boyfriend's favorite comic book hero!

If you were creating a Spider-Man inspired nail polish collection, what would you name the polish? Answer in the comments below!

Pastel Nail Colors that Match Your Mood

Next time you're jonesing for some new nail polish, why not grab a shade that says something? I love nail polish, and I love it even more when they have cute names attached. It's like a little hint of personality in a bottle, and it really says a lot about the inspiration for the color.

Pastels are back again for spring, and this time pretty little Easter-inspired hues are popular nail colors, too.

You Can Get a Runway Manicure from Walgreens

You never thought I'd say that did you?

Well, it's true. I'm not sure when it happened or how, but last week when I was at Walgreen's I stumbled upon the mother load of nail polishes. There, in a pretty little display, was essie nail polish. I did a double take.

And for the second year in a row, essie is back at Fall 2012 Mercedes Benze Fashion Week doing manicures for DKNY, Tory Burch, and Carolina Herrera, just to name a few.

"I've always said that color is the ultimate accessory for women," says Essie Weingarten, the founder and creative director behind the iconic brand. "So our partnership with so many amazing designers during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week continues to thrill and inspire us. Not only is it the perfect collaboration for essie as a fashion-forward brand, but I love that we're giving women everywhere their first look at what's coming next from the industry's best."

And I'd like to thank Essie Weingarten for making her polish accessible to all. I, like most small town girls, live in a town where there's a Walgreens on every corner. (For my New York beauties, that's comparable to seeing your beloved Duane Reade's on every block.)

essie manicurists created pretty stellar looks on the runway last year. I was particularly smitten with this Morrocan inspired manicure created for Pamela Love's Spring 2012 show. It's easy and simple enough to recreate at home.

You can get this runway look by painting the entire nail with essie 'topless and barefoot,' an opaque matte nude, as the base for the look. Let dry completely. Using essie’s 'little brown dress,' a chocolate brown shade, paint at a diagonal from each corner of the nail bed to the tip to create a triangular shape. Start at the left side of the nail, brushing up to the middle on the diagonal. Do the same on the right side to finish the “V” formation.

If you're excited as excited as me that you can get a runway manicure from Walgreens, lemme hear you say, "yeah!"

When it Comes to a Sparkly Mani, which OPI Holiday Polish Captures Your Fancy?

Smitten with jewel tones and sparkles, Beauty and the Budget spotted OPI's holiday 2011 line of sparkly polishes while getting a manicure the other day!

Inspired by Disney’s The Muppets (in theaters November 23), OPI’s holiday 2011 collection features 12 limited-edition shades inspired by the loveable gang, including Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie, Beaker, and Gonzo. From shimmering neutral pink and taupes to glittery jewel-tones, these lacquers capture the joyfulness of the Muppets and provide the perfect touch to any holiday outfit. The polishes are available now at stores like ULTA, Trade Secret, Pure Beauty, and professional salons, and I certainly wanted to share the collection with you!

Although opting for a traditional red (because I was shooting my first ever web video! details soon...), I was dying try the sparkly polish. Maybe I'll treat myself soon to another manicure, and I just might get something sparkly!

Take a look at the collection in the gallery, and let me know which one is your fave!

Are You Guilty of Shaking Your Nail Polish? 5 Mistakes People Make in At-Home Manicures

Recently, my boyfriend treated me to a manicure at the Aveda salon. The manicurist was wonderful--meticulous and efficient--so I made sure to pay attention so that I could replicate the manicure for myself at home. Of course, I was familiar with most of the process, except for one thing--I noticed the manicurist didn't shake the nail polish bottle. Instead, she rolled it between her palms.

That got me to thinking... what else is keeping me from getting the perfect at-home manicure?

5 Classic Shades of Polish to Wear Year Round

A manicure is never out of fashion, but the color of the polish might be. During the winter, darker shades (think maroons, plums, navy, etc.) tend to become popular shades whereas in the summer bright colors (think yellow, coral, green, etc.) are the shades of the season. However, there are five shades that are completely timeless. So if you don't have a clue what shades are cool right this minute, use a classic shade of polish that's fit to match nearly every ensemble.

  1. Red polish will never go out of style. Period. And in my opinion, it's one of the most popular and widely used polishes. Brighter reds are popular during the summer while deep reds are more fashionable during winter, but personally, you can wear whatever shade of red you want any time of the year.
  2. Gray polish is rather new as a beauty trend, but it's such a classic and versatile shade that it's going to be around for a while. In most polishes, I prefer a glossy finish, but with gray a matte finish tends to look best.
  3. Nude polish is my absolute favorite. As a visual merchandiser at Forever 21, my job requires a lot of grunt work that tends to chip even the best manicure. With the perfect nude nail color, you can't really tell if the polish is chipping and it matches everything!
  4. Black nail polish isn't just for goth girls anymore. While traditional beauties may shy away from this bold color, I suggest trying the shade at least once. With a glossy finish, it can look elegant and chic.
  5. Pink polish is just as classic as red, and you might as well consider both shades as beauty staples. Like a great lip color, women won't ever stop wearing these two colors. Any pink polish is perfect year round, but I would invest in a few bottles of a light pink polish for an uber classic look that will match most items in your wardrobe.

Latest Beauty Trend: Colorblock Nails and Cool Shades to Try Together

I was elated to discover this cool take on a manicure over at All Lacquered Up! Using fashion's hottest summer trend, the savvy blogger gave herself a colorblock manicure.

To get this look, simply paint a base coat of polish in one color. Then use another color (such as black) for the second coat. Paint the second coat a third away from the top of your nail, all the way to the base. For the third and final coat, paint the bottom third of your nail in another color, such as the dark green she used. Let each coat dry fully before moving on to the next step. You can get as creative as you like with your manicure, and she recommends using tape to create fresh lines.

Try some of these color combinations below for a really stellar manicure!

Blue

Summer Brights

Shades of Pink

10 Activities You Can Do While Waiting on Your Manicure to Dry

Painting your nails is so time consuming, and there is no such greater disappointment than ruining a nail job just after finishing it. As women, we know how to multitask, but finding another activity to do that's completely hands free is tricky. Sure there are the quick dry polishes, but they chip too soon. You can speed up your manicure by using a hair dryer or running your fingers under cool water. Still, those methods aren't foolproof. The best way is the let your nail polish dry naturally.

Luckily, there are ten fun activities you can do while waiting on that mani to dry. And while you're at it, give your feet some attention with a bright colored pedi!

While you're waiting on your nails to dry, you can...

  1. Finish drinking your morning Latte
  2. Rate your last few Netflix rentals
  3. Watch television (for me, it's reruns of Will & Grace)
  4. Check all of those old, unread emails
  5. Scan through Google News for the day's top stories
  6. Finally call Mom and Dad on Skype or Facetime
  7. Play whatever game you're addicted to on your iPhone
  8. Lay out poolside or at the beach (bonus for getting that base tan in!)
  9. Read a magazine or book (just be careful when you flip the pages)
  10. Check out the latest gossip on Facebook
